In this communication is described the current status of the cartographic production at IGNE (Instituto Geográfico Nacional de España) for medium scales and how the cartographic processes currently made with traditional digital systems are being translated into GIS technology. For such purposes, a data-model that supports the duality of working with two data representations (cartographic and geometric) was built, trying to share and integrate data coming from many public cartographic institutions in Spain. It also allows working/updating over map sheet units, but keeping full entities across the sheets. It is also described in this communication how we expect to solve the common cartographic problems in GIS, i.e. label positioning, symbolization, plotting etc., into the whole workflow.
